Incentives to attract investors and Digital Nomads

Significant changes were induced by the recent enactment of law no. 4825/2021 in the field of attracting investments, as well as in supporting the institution of digital nomads through the provision of “digital Visa”. It is noted that the program of accommodation of investors in Greece is already attracting great interest.

What does the new law provide for the residence of investors in Greece?

Initially, this law added important provisions to immigration legislation, which create additional incentives to attract investment to Greece for third-country nationals and their families. More specifically, the so-called “investment mobility” is introduced in the area of residence permits for third-country nationals. Thus, interested investors, who have obtained a residence permit as investors for investment in a bank deposit or intangible securities, are given the opportunity to liquidate these investment funds, moving to another investment category, i.e. either another investment product of the immigration legislation, or in the real estate market (Golden Visa). In this way, the possibility of alternative utilization of the investment funds is provided, at the same time ensuring the legal stay in Greece of the investors and their family members.

Accommodation of “Digital Nomads” in Greece and in the EU

Furthermore, the institution of “Digital Nomads” is introduced. The new regulation, which comes at a time when significant changes in traditional employment relationships have taken place, make it possible for self-employed or third-country nationals (“Digital Nomads”) , who work remotely using digital technology and media that replace their physical presence in the workplace with employers or clients outside Greece, to reside legally in Greece for at least two years. Finally, this opportunity is provided to their family members. In this way, at a time when due to COVID-19 many workers choose or are forced to work remotely, they are given the opportunity to reside legally in Greece and move freely in the EU even if they work in foreign companies.
